Homocore

Homocore was one of the first anarcho-queer zines as well as queer zines in general. It was published in San Francisco by Tom Jennings and Deke Nihilson from 1988 to 1991.

The publication was directed towards members of the queercore punk scene and  helped popularise the queercore movement on the west coast of America.

The queercore movement was an offshoot of the punk subculture, which came into existence in the mid-80’s. It rejected mainstream society’s norms (i.e. hetero- as well as homo-normativity) perceiving these as a form of oppression. It also rejected the notion of belonging which other LGBTQ+ communities were aspiring for at the time. Queercore expressed itself through DIY culture, including music (originating from hardcore punk), film and independent publishing. The most popular queercore bands include Lesbians on Ecstasy, Pansy Division, Limp Wrist and Tribe 8.
